There's a tight crop of the retouched face on my Flickr page here:

The lighting is a little different on the retouched one too. I made it a bit more harsh for my personal shot.

Excellent. Nice to see a pretty face after scrolling through masses of information. It was nice to take a pause. Perhaps I will return when time permits.

I definitely prefer this one and agree totally with your opinion on the nose. Hope mags go back to less retouching soon. Some of them have so heavily retouched pictures, that I am asking myself what the sense of all this is. Would be very interesting to know what readers really prefer : our real work or the totally retouched mag work.

Could you give the lighting Rx for this shot? Thanks!

I've added lighting info to the post. The retouched shot linked above has similar lighting, but the side lights were positioned so that they didn't hit the sides of the face, just the hair.

I've learned more reading this blog than I did in 4 years at (overly priced hellofajoke) art school!

Ha! Thanks Steve! I never went to school for photography... Well, if you don't count the semester of photo 101 I had in high school. I'm still learning every day though.

A good studio has plenty of flags. I use flags made for this purpose, but you really could use anything that blocks stray light from hitting the lens. Basically, the light is aimed at the sides of her face, but it spills onto the lens too, so I just put a stand with a flag between the light and the camera. Make sure when doing this, that you're not effecting the light falling on the model too.
